Keynote1: Neutral Hosting for 5G: Opportunities & Challenges
Shuaib Siddiqui, i2CAT Foundation - 5G Barcelona
Room: Aula Magna

Abstract

The mass roll out of 5G will require network sharing beyond conventional methods and adaptation of virtualization and cloudification trends to meet its promises of increased data rates and ubiquitous coverage. The neutral host model will come to play a key role on the deployment of 5G networrks, especially in urban scenarios where very dense deployments of Small Cells will be required to serve businesses and big events. This talk will focus on the concept, opportunities and challenges of neutral hosting for 5G networks.

Biography

Shuaib Siddiqui has 10+ years of experience working in the academic, research and industry of ICT sector. At present, he is a senior researcher at i2CAT Foundation where he is also the Area Manager for Software Networks research lab. Since he joined i2CAT Foundation in 2015, he has been active in 5G related projects (under H2020) on the topics of control, management, & orchestration platforms based on SDN/NFV, network slicing, and NFV/SDN security. Currently, he is working on the H2020 5GCity (5G PPP Phase 2) project, as Deputy Project Coordinator, which aims to design, develop and deploy a neutral host platform for 5G infrastructures in three cities (Barcelona, Bristol and Lucca). He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) (Spain), M.Sc. in Communication Systems (2007) from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, and B.Sc. in Computer Engineering (2004) from King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM), Saudi Arabia. He has given several talks at Mobile World Congress, Smart City Expo World Congress, SDN/NFV World Congress and other events. One of his publications, based on his PhD thesis, received the IEEE Internet Technical Committee (ITC) paper of the year award for 2015.

Keynote2: Standards for building a trust-based 5G era

Dr. Chaesub LEE, Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, Switzerland --> represented by Dr. Bilel Jamoussi.
Room: Aula Magna

Abstract

5G is being developed as a next generation smart infrastructure which will cover much wider areas than previous networks. Key features of 5G such as ultra-reliability and low latency are promising essential contributions to building innovative, smart and sustainable societies. Autonomous driving and helping Industry 4.0 through massive machine communications are critical examples. Taking into consideration these features of 5G and future prospection, this presentation will identify roles and functions of standards to help a society using 5G systems be a trust-based community.

Biography

Dr. Bilel Jamoussi A distinguished engineer, leader, and diplomat; multilingual standardization expert and holder of 22 patents. He has been Chief of the Study Groups Department of ITU Standardization Bureau (TSB) in Geneva Switzerland since 2010. He has led the coordination of the bureau’s standards moving activities into a new era characterized by digital transformation that needs an increased collaboration with vertical sectors such as healthcare, transportation, utility, and banking. His innovative approach has served as a catalyst to launch new standards initiatives related to emerging technologies such as IoT, Blockchain, AI and Quantum, attracting a new wave of memberships from non-traditional players. He has also been credited with bringing the telco and financial sectors together to develop digital payments guidelines and standards with the aim of advancing financial inclusion globally. Bilel is recognized as a key figure in the ICT industry. Key achievements under his tenure have been important new standards while effectively managing staff by recruiting new talent, improving gender balance, delivering new work methods, and staying within budget. Prior to 2010, he worked in the private sector for 15 years and held senior executive positions such as Director of Standards for Nortel. In this role he participated in over 90 standards making bodies worldwide. In the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), he authored a number of Internet standards. As an IEEE Senior Member, he was elected to the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) Board of Governors and the IEEE-SA Corporate Advisory Group. He holds a BSc, MSc and PhD degrees in Computer Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University, USA. Bilel has lived in Tunisia, Canada, USA, and Switzerland, giving him a unique global viewpoint. He is fluent in Arabic, French, and English and speaks some Spanish and German.
